The Los Angeles Lakers are surging at the right time. Los Angeles has played their way into the Western conference play-in picture after making new additions at the trade deadline, including D’Angelo Russell and Jarred Vanderbilt. Perhaps most impressively, the Lakers are doing it all without LeBron James, who’s out with a foot injury.
LeBron offered his support to the Lakers after their big win over the Raptors on Friday night.
“Man I love this team!!!,” James said after the game. The win kept the Lakers in 9th place in the Western conference, where they sit a 1/2 game ahead of the Utah Jazz. The Lakers have said that they are aiming for the 6th playoff spot, which would help them avoid the play-in tournament altogether.
An added benefit of advancing to the 6th spot is a potential matchup with either the Sacramento Kings or Memphis Grizzlies.
The Kings roster is very young with minimal playoff experience, and the Grizzlies are unsure of when All-Star point guard Ja Morant will return to the team.
If the Lakers are able to get to the 6th seed, it may spark a deep playoff run, something that seemed completely out of the question for the Lakers just a few weeks ago.
