LeBron James has been candid about his desire to spend at least one season in the NBA with his son Bronny.
“I got to play with my boy,” he said back in February, in the midst of Bronny’s senior season in high school and before he had committed to USC for next fall.
Now, amid talk of possible retirement, LeBron says that while his goal remains the same, he won’t necessarily expect his son to have the same aspirations.
“I’ve done what I’ve had to do in this league, and my son is going to take his journey,” LeBron said after Monday’s season-ending loss to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.
“So, just because that’s my aspiration or my goal, doesn’t mean it’s his. And I’m absolutely OK with that.”
It’s likely that LeBron doesn’t want to put unnecessary pressure on his son, especially if Bronny’s first season turns out to be LeBron’s final season.
Adjusting to life in the NBA is difficult on its own, but that difficulty would be multiplied exponentially with one of the greatest players of all time – who also happens to be your father – as a teammate.
LeBron’s future plans remain to be seen, but it seems that he is at peace with the idea of his son establishing his own legacy, with or without him as a teammate.
