Throughout his NBA career, LeBron James has been identified by two numbers: The No. 23 in Cleveland, the No. 6 in Miami and both numbers with the Los Angeles Lakers. After donning No. 6 this past season, he’s making a change for the next one.
Speaking to ESPN, LeBron’s agent Rich Paul announced that James will return to wearing the No. 23 in the 2023-24 season. Paul said that LeBron previously chose to wear 6 to honor Lakers legend Bill Russell, who passed away last year.
The NBA made the decision to retire the No. 6 league-wide to honor the 11-time NBA champion.
“It’s LeBron’s decision,” Paul said, via Dave McMenamin. “He chose to out of respect for Bill Russell.”
