Throughout his NBA career, LeBron James has been identified by two numbers: The No. 23 in Cleveland, the No. 6 in Miami and both numbers with the Los Angeles Lakers. After donning No. 6 this past season, he’s making a change for the next one.

Speaking to ESPN, LeBron’s agent Rich Paul announced that James will return to wearing the No. 23 in the 2023-24 season. Paul said that LeBron previously chose to wear 6 to honor Lakers legend Bill Russell, who passed away last year.

The NBA made the decision to retire the No. 6 league-wide to honor the 11-time NBA champion.

“It’s LeBron’s decision,” Paul said, via Dave McMenamin. “He chose to out of respect for Bill Russell.”

LeBron James wore the No. 23 for all 11 of his seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, sandwiching his four-year run with the Miami Heat.

LeBron stuck with 23 for his first two years with the Lakers before switching to No. 6 last year.
