Before fighting to preserve the Los Angeles Lakers’ season Monday night, LeBron James congratulated Carmelo Anthony on his retirement.
James celebrated his longtime friend, whom he played alongside on Team USA and for the Lakers during the 2021-22 season.
“I’m just so proud of you, man, and so blessed and humbled to be a part of your journey,” James said in a video the Lakers posted on Twitter. “You’re one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen.”

James and Anthony came up together in a stacked 2023 draft class also featuring future Hall of Famers Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. LeBron is now the only active player selected that year.
They’ve been linked ever since James narrowly beat out Anthony in the 2003-04 NBA Rookie of the Year race. Anthony, who goes out ninth in all-time scoring, won a national title and three Olympic gold medals.
“Congratulations to you, to your family,” James told Anthony. “Looking forward to opening some great vino, smoking a nice cigar in celebration of you. Salute, brother.”
