Leeds are set to discover whether or not a mere £4.2million will be enough to land Italian wonderkid Wilfried Gnonto over ‘the next few days’, according to reports. The Whites are understood to be in talks with the agent of the FC Zurich star who, at 18, already has four caps for the Italian national team under his belt.
As if Leeds weren’t already eager to reinforce their attack before the transfer window closes in a little over two weeks’ time, an injury to Patrick Bamford has seen the need for further firepower upfront become a matter of urgency. Jesse Marsch’s men have been linked with a number of names this summer and the latest is a youngster revered as something of a wonderkid.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Leeds are in contact with Gnonto’s agent as they push to win the race for the highly-rated teenager’s services. The Whites are understood to face stiff competition from Feyenoord over the Italian prodigy.
The Italian outlet claim Zurich’s asking price for the striker, who has entered the final year of his current contract, has halved since June, plummeting from around £10m to potentially less than £5m. The belief is that Leeds have submitted a £4.2m proposal to the Swiss side, which is expected to be ‘examined in depth over the next few days’.

Gnonto’s impressive displays at club level then saw him rewarded with an international call-up by Italian national team manager Roberto Mancini ahead of the Azzurri’s involvement in the 2022 Finalissima against Argentina. The forward made his senior debut for Italy against Germany in the pair’s Nations League meeting back in June, coming on as a substitute to claim an assist in a 1-1 draw.
Gnonto then featured in Italy’s fourth group match, where he scored his first international goal in a 5-2 defeat for Mancini’s men against Germany. In getting himself on the scoresheet at the age of 18 years and 222 days, the attacker became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Italian national team, breaking the previous record held by Bruno Nicole back in 1958.
