After injuries to two of their star players, the Phoenix Suns are out of the NBA Playoffs. The Suns’ lack of depth caught up to them in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals and the Denver Nuggets were able to take advantage of a depleted team.
One player who missed time was center Deandre Ayton. Ayton sat out of the decisive Game 6 with a rib contusion, meaning that Phoenix would head into the game without two of their normal starters as Chris Paul was also injured.
One former NBA coach described the Ayton situation with one very direct word.

The Hall of Famer seemingly criticized Ayton for sitting out of an elimination game, even with an injury. Ayton wasn’t extremely productive on either end of the floor prior to his injury, but it makes sense that the Suns would have had a better chance to win with him on the court.
Two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic sent the Suns home with another of his patented triple-doubles, controlling the flow of the Nuggets’ offense. Denver led by 30 at the half before going on to win by 25, ending the Suns’ season with a lopsided home loss for the second year in a row.
It’s difficult to know exactly what Ayton was feeling when he decided to sit out Thursday’s game, but George Karl has made his opinion very clear on the Suns center.
