The NFL and NBA lost a former member of their ownership fraternities today with the passing of former Minnesota Vikings, San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets owner Red McCombs. He was 95 years old.
McCombs served as owner of the Spurs from the 1970s until the early-1990s, during which he was instrumental in moving the team to San Antonio. While he never won a ring with the team, he did oversee the ascension of NBA legend David Robinson on the team.
Taking to Twitter, Robinson offered his condolences to McCombs. He called McCombs “a legendary figure” in the city of San Antonio who had a huge impact on his life.
“R.I.P. Red McCombs. He was a legendary figure in San Antonio, and had a huge impact in my life. We will miss you!” Robinson wrote.
Red McCombs made his fortune in cars in the 1950s and began investing in sports in the 1970s, buying the then-Dallas Chaparrals and helping them get the HemisFair Arena constructed as their first home.
In the years that followed, McCombs would also buy stakes in the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Vikings and the arena football team the San Antonio Force.
Our hearts go out to McCombs’ family and loved ones.
