If a toilet bears black marks, it is likely that households are not cleaning it regularly enough.
For those who take the time to regularly clean their toilet bowl, it won’t have the time to develop any staining, black, yellow or brown.
However, fear not as cleaning enthusiasts have taken to social media to share their top tips to get rid of the black streaks in their toilets.
Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, one woman asked for advice on how to clean her toilet.
Kimmey Wiseman wrote: “Hi, my toilet bowl’s inside has horrible stubborn black stains that seem hard to shift. Any tips anyone?”

Black streaks in the toilet can be caused by mould, bacteria or mineral deposits.
The most likely cause of persistent black streaks is mineral deposits from hard water, which develop into limescale.
If the water in your area is hard, mineral deposits will start to form in the toilet. Over time, they will go black but can start out white or yellow.
The most common culprit is the mineral manganese, but iron and calcium also do their bit.
The post received over 120 comments from group members suggesting the best times to use for the job.
The most commonly suggested way to remove black toilet bowl stains was to use Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner.
Posting an image of the cleaning product, Lyn Ludlow said: “Use this and leave on overnight or a few hours. It works a treat on mine.”
In response to Lyn, Kelly Maddocks commented: “100 percent. I used bottles and bottles of normal bleach before and worked a bit but one big dose of this left overnight in my toilet left it completely clear in the morning.”
Lyn added: “I absolutely love this stuff, my toilet was stained and I couldn’t get them off no matter what I used and how much I scrubbed but this lifted it instantly. It’s brilliant, I love this stuff.”
Val Patmore instructed: “Harpic black and leave as long as possible.” Debs Don said: “Black Harpic is amazing. I love this stuff.”
Other Mrs Hinch fans suggested some natural alternatives to get rid of black stains in toilet bowls.
Kelly Moore said: “Bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice or cola. Don’t need chemicals to clean it. I can’t use bleach products due to an allergy, so that’s what I use.”
Janie Ward advised: “Take the water out and then scrub the bowl with white vinegar and baking soda. They are good cleaning products.”
Susan Pearson suggested: “A couple of bottles of cheap cola or baking soda and white vinegar, and leave overnight.”
A DIY solution, like baking soda and vinegar or lemon juice, is a common method to get rid of these types of stains.
