Likely Uber Hacking Suspect, 17, Arrested By City Of London Police

In conjunction with an investigation by the U.K. National Cyber Crime Unit, the City of London Police announced on Friday the arrest of a 17-year-old on suspicion of hacking offenses. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was taken into custody on Thursday evening.

However, as the arrest was made in Oxfordshire, and given the suspect’s age, cybersecurity experts are pretty sure this is the supposed leader of the Lapsus$ crime group and thought to be behind the Uber and Rockstar Games hacks.

This is likely the same person that I reported was named by some underground crime forums as being responsible for both the Uber and Rockstar Games hacks as an FBI investigation was underway.

That hacker, using the ‘TeaPot’ handle, boasted about how he had easily breached Uber networks and leaked 90 videos, including early development footage of the GTA 6 game from Rockstar. He also claimed to have GTA 6 source code, but this was being withheld from publication as extortion is a trademark of Lapsus$ as well as hacking for ‘lolz.’

Earlier this year, in March, if it is the same young man, he was arrested by the City of London Police in connection with activities involving the Lapsus$ group. That arrest was also in Oxfordshire, England.

For now, the City of London Police is only saying that he remains in custody as investigations continue. More information as I get it on this breaking story.
