Jaguar is marking 34 years since its outright win at the 24 hours at Le Mans, in 1988, with a limited-edition F-Pace SUV, called the Edition 1988.
This being the SVR version of the F-Pace, it is powered by a 550-horsepower, supercharged V8 engine. Just like the SVR I drove (and adored) in 2021, the new Edition 1988 model accelerates to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 178 mph.
Harking back to the Jaguar racers of 1988 (and their iconic purple, white and gold color scheme with Silk Cut advertising), the F-Pace SVR Edition 1988 features unique ‘midnight amethyst’ paint, champagne gold forged, 22-inch alloy wheels and ‘sunset gold’ accents.
This version of the SVR comes from the same department at Jaguar Land Rover responsible for the Jaguar F-Type Heritage 60 Edition and the Land Rover Defender V8 Bond Edition.
Jaguar says it will build 394 examples for the F-Pace Edition 1988, which is one for every lap completed by the XJR-9 driven to victory at Le Mans by Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace. Of the five cars Jaguar entered, two retired and the remaining three finished first, fourth and sixteenth. The winning car covered a distance of 3,313 miles.
Contrasting the sunset gold badging and other details are glass black finishes to the door mirror caps, brake calipers, wheel center caps and the letter R of the car’s SVR badging. The interior features open-pore carbon fiber finishers, ebony leather upholstery and exclusive sunset gold satin detailing across the dashboard, steering wheel, gear shift paddles and seats, which are both heated and cooled.
The car will have its first public reveal at this year’s 24 hours of Le Mans on 8-12 June, followed by its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 23-26 June. It is priced from $111,150 in the US and £101,550 in the UK.
Richard Woolley, creative director of Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations, said: “The Midnight Amethyst Gloss paintwork appears black until its amethyst undertones are revealed in bright sunshine, emphasizing the SVR’s dynamic exterior. To achieve this dramatic Ultra Metallic Gloss finish, we assessed more than 40 variations to create the desired depth of color.”
