Limpopo Championship: Golf tournament on the horizon

Preparations to host the 5th installment of the Limpopo Championship golf tournament are in the pipeline in Limpopo province. This comes after the media launch on Friday, hosted by Limpopo Tourism Agency at Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate in Mookgophong.

Limpopo Championship is sanctioned by Sunshine Tour and attracts golf professionals and enthusiasts around the world to compete for the prestigious title in the heart of Limpopo province.

Limpopo Championship 2023

The tournament will run from 30 March to 2 April 2023 for the professional ‘elite’ golfers and will see 156 golfers and caddies from 50 countries descend to Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate in Mookgophong to compete for the R2 million cash prize.

Mateusz Gradecki from Poland currently holds the bragging rights for the 2022 Limpopo Championship title. Brandon Stone from South Africa bagged the title in 2021 before his fellow countryman, JC Ritchie, claimed the title for two consecutive years since the inception of Limpopo Championship in 2019.

The tournament seeks to “position Limpopo as a premier golf destination,” according to Limpopo Tourism Agency Board Chairperson, Mr. Andrew Dipela. The event plays a significant role in boosting tourism in the province and within the Waterberg district.

Additionally, in 2022, Limpopo recorded over 6000 visitors and reached over 60 million households locally and internationally during Limpopo Championship golf tournament, according to Dipela.

The tournament’s impact

The tournament plays a significant role in boosting the township economy of Mookgophong and improving the livelihoods of its people through job creation and local procurement.

According to Mr. Dipela, 175 jobs in 2022 and this year’s event will see over 200 temporary employment created during the tournament.

Limpopo Championship aims to enrich and support local businesses in Mookgophong and so, small businesses around Mookgophong will have an opportunity to exhibit their products and services to the local and international visitors attending the golf tournament.

An array of activities will happen concurrently with the golf tournament to enhance visitors’ experience. Activities will include a comedy night, creative arts and SMME exhibition all taking place at the host venue, Euphoria Golf, and Lifestyle Estate.
