Lionel Messi’s salary explained as Inter Miami star becomes best-paid MLS player

When it comes to earning the big money, Lionel Messi is one person who is not short of a few pounds. The football megastar is one of the world’s richest athletes and will add to his enormous wealth after signing a deal to join MLS side Inter Miami. But just how much will the Argentine earn while plying his trade in the States?

Messi has signed lucrative contracts at each of his three professional clubs and during the height of his career at Barcelona, the superstar earned up to $165 million (£136m) per year in both salary and incentives.

After a copy of his contract was leaked, it was shown he earned a whopping $610,000 (£466,000) a week, as per a report by Goal. Messi is on considerably less at his new club, co-owned by David Beckham, but remains among the highest earners in sport.

The 36-year-old is now reportedly on a staggering $54m (£41m) base salary, potentially rising to around $62m (£47m), and is comfortably the league’s top earner. Chicago Fire’s Xherdan Shaqiri previously topped the charts on $8m (£6.12m), a mere drop in the ocean in comparison.

Messi’s earnings are even more impressive when broken down. Considering his highest potential earnings, the World Cup winner could take home:

  • £3.67m a month
  • £918,369 a week
  • £131,196 a day
  • £5,466 an hour
  • £91.11 a minute
  • £1.52 a second

The enormous sums are not only thanks to his salary with Inter Miami but a long-term partneship with Adidas which helps top up the Argentine’s bank balance. That sum could also increase with a potential deal involving a share of the streaming revenue between MLS and Apple.

While money will surely be the least of Messi’s worries, the World Cup winner could have earned even more after parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain. A reported $440m-a-year (£336m) contract was propsed by Saudia Arabian side Al-Hilal which would have seen him renew his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is earning upwards of $220m (£168m) at Al-Nassr after leaving Premier League side Manchester United. The Portuguese icon has since been joined by a host of football stars following his move to play in the Saudi Pro League.

Other high-profile players who followed suit include current Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema after his contract with Real Madrid expired. He has since been joined at Al-Ittihad by former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.
