José Luis Callisaya Diaz crawled on all fours through the grassland near Chonchocoro prison in La Paz earlier this month with a sheepskin over his back, but guards caught him anyway.

He had made it past security and was trying to break through an external wall at the jail on Feb. 4 when officials noticed Diaz was not in his cell.

The prisoner seems to have believed bad weather would offer cover for his attempt to bolt.

The inmate, known as El Arana — the spider —  will face disciplinary action over this attempted escape.

Director of the Penitentiary, Regime Juan Carlos Limpias, informed the general populace that officers from the San Pedro de Chonchocoro Penitentiary Center had foiled the escape of José Luis Callisaya Diaz, “Who took advantage of the inclement weather to try to flee through one of the walls of the external perimeter of the prison.”
