Little-known driving laws in Europe could see UK motorists hit with heavy fines

Many drivers across the UK are looking forward to the coming months when they will be able to set off on holiday.

A large number of Britons will be heading for the European mainland to enjoy their time off over the summer.

However, when driving in different countries, motorists can often get caught out by driving laws which they are not used to.

While some rules are obvious and will result in heavy penalties like speeding or drinking, others are little-known and potentially unusual.

In France, all cars must have high-visibility jackets for every passenger as well as a warning triangle in the event of an emergency or accident.

Motorists should also double-check their rental cars when heading off to make sure everything is included. Drivers without the necessary safety features risk a £643 fine.

According to Lotus Car Rental, motorists can also receive fines for overtaking another car when on the road in Europe.

Overtaking rules and regulations are strictly enforced in Spain and can result in a fine of £514 and points on their licence.

Motorists should remain calm when behind the wheel, even if there is a slow driver in front of them and stick to designated passing zones and the relevant road signs.

Alexander Haraldsson, CEO at Lotus Car Rental, said: “In Iceland for instance, weather conditions can be extremely unpredictable even during the summer months.

“Heavy rain, strong winds and even snow can make driving conditions difficult for locals, let alone unsuspecting tourists.

“For this reason, it’s mandatory for all motorists to use winter tyres from November to April in certain parts of the country.”

The tyres allow for vehicles to get extra traction on ice roads and is especially vital for anyone heading out of Reykjavik and exploring other parts of the country.

If anyone is caught without the suitable tyres, drivers could face hefty fines up to £114.

Some countries in Europe, including Poland, Bulgaria and Iceland, require motorists to use headlights at all times, even during daylight hours in a bid to improve road safety.

Drivers who are legally required to wear glasses must also have a spare pair in their rental car in Spain, France, Germany or Switzerland.
