Liverpool’s 2021: Anfield woes, sensational Salah and an Old Trafford rout

Liverpool are set to have Mohamed Salah available for their upcoming visit to title rivals Chelsea.

It was thought that the 29-year-old would be forced to miss out on a return to his former club due to his participation in next month’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt are scheduled to kick off their AFCON campaign against Nigeria on January 11, just nine days after the Reds’ trip to Stamford Bridge.

However, Liverpool have struck an agreement with the Egyptian FA to release Salah immediately after their clash with Thomas Tuchel’s men.

And so the prolific winger will be available to Jurgen Klopp for what could be a vital fixture in the Premier League title race.

The Reds will still have Salah available for the clash with Chelsea

It remains to be seen whether Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will be afforded the same luxury by the Senegalese and Guinean footballing authorities respectively.

But even a run to the Afcon final for any of those players would only result in them missing a further two Premier League games.

Klopp has already been handed a significant boost with the news that Covid-struck trio Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Fabinho are set to be back to face Leicester on December 28.

And he has been given further good news, with the recent reduction in the UK government’s recommended isolation period meaning Thiago Alcantara is now likely to be available against Chelsea.

Should further positive cases or injury setbacks be avoided, the Reds boss could be able to name his strongest team at Stamford Bridge.

Klopp, whose Reds side saw their Boxing Day clash with Leeds cancelled, gave a passionate presentation to the Premier League this week about player welfare.

He spoke about the medical advice behind playing hours, and made clear the data supports a gap of four days between matches.
