Klopp defends Liverpool transfer policy as top-four rivals spend big

Getting it right in the transfer market is never easy.

Even the top managers occasionally get it wrong, but for Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and departing sporting director Michael Edwards those have thankfully been rare.

That will bring comfort to Liverpool fans ahead of the January transfer window, with the club rumoured to be considering dipping into the market to make additions to the squad.

They have been linked with a ‘magician’ who plays for one of their Premier League rivals, while a player they passed up the opportunity to sign over summer has been criticised at his new club.

The transfer window can’t come soon enough for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with three stars picking up injuries in recent weeks.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Liverpool headlines.

Injuries wrack up

The Reds could be without three key players for the visit of Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson were both sent home from international duty with injuries, joining Roberto Firmino in the treatment room.

Liverpool captain Henderson scored and completed 90 minutes in the 5-0 victory against Albania on Friday but has returned to his club for further assessment on an unspecified injury.

Mane, meanwhile, limped out of Senegal’s 1-1 draw with Togo on Thursday, although his injury has been described as “nothing serious” by his international manager Aliou Cisse.

Firmino will definitely miss the match after picking up a “serious” hamstring injury during Liverpool’s recent Champions League victory against Atletico Madrid. It’s understood he could be ruled out until Christmas.

Liverpool ‘dodged transfer bullet’

Holland forward Donyell Malen has been criticised following a disappointing start to life at Borussia Dortmund.

The Reds were heavily linked with a summer move for the exciting young Dutch star, with Jurgen Klopp known to be in the market for attacking reinforcements.

But a move to Anfield failed to materialise and Malen instead joined Dortmund as a replacement for Jadon Sancho.

And he’s now been blasted by his boss, Marco Rose, and Dortmund director of football Michael Zorc over his failure to adapt to the demands of the Bundesliga.

Reds could target Premier League ‘magician’

Ahead of the January transfer window, Leeds winger Raphinha is the favourite to join Liverpool if they decide to open their cheque book.

The 24-year-old has been a revelation since his move to Elland Road in October 2020, scoring 11 goals in 40 Premier League appearances.

His impressive form saw him make his Brazil debut last month and, injury permitting, will be part of Tite’s squad for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

He’s also had an impact on new teammate Daniel James, who joined Leeds from Manchester United in the summer, after he described the Brazillian as a ‘magician’.
