Liverpool goalkeeper coach John Achterberg is hoping Loris Karius can find a new club this month.

Karius, 28, hasn’t played for the Reds since making two mistakes in their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May 2018.

The former Germany youth international has since spent time on loan at Turkish outfit Besiktas and German side Union Berlin but is now back in Liverpool’s reserves.

Karius is currently the fourth-choice stopper at Anfield, behind Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian.

Unless a goalkeeper crisis emerges, he won’t play for Liverpool again and will leave the club when his contract expires in June.

Achterberg, however, is hoping Karius can secure a move this month and not waste another six months of his career.

“In the end it’s down to him, his agent and the club to try to find a solution,” Achterberg told The Athletic. “Hopefully there will be one this month.

“It doesn’t help anyone to sit for another six months without the feeling that you are really fighting for something. That’s not going to improve him.

“He needs to use his quality to make a career now. Loris has a lot of good qualities. If not he will train with us until the end of his contract.

“If Loris goes then we will look to bring one up from the academy again… we are always looking for who might be the next one to come up.

“Our aim is to keep creating our own goalies. To do that we need to keep improving both our scouting and our ways of working to find them and then develop them.”

Speaking about his plans in September, Karius said: “My goal is to be under the bar every week, and we’ll see where that is.

“There were a few clubs in the picture, but that didn’t get off the ground for various reasons.

“I’ve been out for about six weeks and I’ll try to re-join training after the international break and get back in top shape. And then we’ll see what will happen in the winter.”

Kelleher is the most recent goalkeeper to emerge from Liverpool’s academy after joining the club in the summer of 2015 as a 16-year-old.

The Irishman, now 23, has impressed when given the opportunity – producing some excellent saves in the recent Premier League game against Chelsea – and made his senior international debut.

“He’s been very good,” said Manchester United legend Gary Neville after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s a big task and a big game to come into. I like what the goalkeeper has done, even on simple things like that. He’s looked really composed and quite calm all the way through this game.”

Discussing Kelleher, Achterberg added: “Caoimhin is doing really well. Unbelievable speed and reactions, but he’s also calm… he’s become a man now.

“He could play every game for his national team, no danger. He has shown that he can play in the Premier League. At the moment, he’s in the right shape and in the right mindset.”
