Liverpool make ‘significantly increased’ offer to La Liga star Gabri Veiga

Liverpool have significantly increased their contract offer to Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga in an attempt to persuade the midfielder to move to Anfield this summer, according to reports. The Merseysiders endured a nightmare 2022/23 campaign and missed out on a place in next season’s Champions League after finishing fifth in the Premier League table.

The Reds secured their first signing of the summer earlier this week when they prised World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister away from Brighton. And they now appear to be chasing another player in the ilk of the Argentina international.

According to Spanish publication SPORT, Liverpool have met Veiga’s £34m release clause and have tabled an improved contract offer. But the north west giants have not yet managed to close out a deal.

Newcastle, who will be playing Champions League next season, are also eyeing a deal and have no issues paying the 21-year-old’s release clause. And the Magpies would be prepared to offer a long and top-level contract.

Interest in Veiga is at its peak, with the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid also said to be keen to secure his signature. Real are currently approaching a potential transfer with great caution, however, and consider the player’s release clause to be excessive. And that could pave the way for the talented Spain under-21s international to head to the Premier League.

“The clauses are in place,” said Celta president Carlos Mourino earlier this year as he spoke about his star man. “We are not going to sell him, rather they are going to buy him from us.

“Nobody has to negotiate because we are not going to sell him. We know of the interest of the teams that initially called, those who’ve spoken with already with Gabri, who is the one with the decision to make. I can assure you that there are teams from England, Italy and France. Our response was, ‘you can’t talk to us because he’s not for sale.’”

Veiga progressed through the Celta academy and made his first-team debut for the club in 2020. He has gone on to feature 55 times for his current employers and played a starring role during the 2022/23 campaign as Celta finished 13th in the La Liga table.

The ace, who signed a fresh deal last summer and is contracted to the Spanish club until 2026, featured 36 times in the league and bagged 11 goals and four assists.
