Even when faced against Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten Manchester City side at Anfield, Van Dijk was bullish in his claims that they were relishing going up against the Premier League champions.
“It sounds cliché but these are the games you want to play,” he said. “You play against the champions, you play against one of the best teams in Europe with probably the most in-form striker, with one of the best midfielders, in my opinion, in the world.
Van Dijk left Anfield with Erling Haaland failing to contribute a goal or assist for the time this season, a clean sheet and a victory to boot. And Liverpool fans will be hoping he can continue his extraordinary streak for a while longer yet.
