Liverpool star Naby Keita ‘hasn’t lived up to’ reputation as replacement advice given

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita ‘hasn’t really lived up to’ his reputation, according to Reds hero Glen Johnson. The former England defender also believes the Merseysiders should consider selling him and replace him with Brighton ace Yves Bissouma.

Liverpool shelled out a then-club record £48million to sign Keita from RB Leipzig in August 2017.

The midfielder spent one final season in Germany before moving to the Premier League a year later.

Big things were expected of the 26-year-old following his arrival at Anfield. But he has since been a bit-part player and has regularly been overlooked by manager Jurgen Klopp.

Keita started just five Premier League matches in the first half of this campaign before jetting off to link-up with Guinea for the Africa Cup of Nations.

And Johnson believes the player’s departure wouldn’t come as much of a loss to the club if he did leave permanently.

Keita has scored 10 goals and contributed five assists in 92 games during three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield.

He helped his side lift the Champions League trophy in 2019, although he was ruled out of the second leg of the semi-final against Barcelona and the final against Tottenham with a groin injury.

The hard-working ace also played his part in Liverpool’s Premier League title success a year later but didn’t appear much until the February after being hit by injury problems.

Keita has 18 months left on his current deal in the north west but has been tipped to exit the club.

Barcelona are reportedly keen to land the player, while Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Roma are also said to be interested.

Bissouma, meanwhile, has lit up the Premier League on the south coast and he is rumoured to be high on Klopp’s wishlist.

The 25-year-old has made 111 appearances for the Seagulls since joining them from Lille in 2018 and has helped the club become a hard-to-beat Premier League outfit.

Brighton have lost just four of their 20 top-flight matches so far this season and are ninth in the table.
