Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has pulled off a serious bargain by completing a deal worth less than £60million to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion, according to former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan. Mac Allister is reportedly poised to become Liverpool’s first summer signing over the next few days, with the Argentina international expected to pen a long-term contract at Anfield after reaching a full agreement with the Reds on personal terms.
Liverpool will pay the full value of Mac Allister’s release clause in order to secure his signature, according to Fabrizio Romano, but the fee involved is said to be far less than the £60million sum that has been reported in recent weeks. Jordan was quick to praise Liverpool for getting the move done quickly when quizzed on his thoughts on talkSPORT, while he also expressed his belief that the Reds have ‘underpaid’ for Mac Allister off the back of his most successful season for club and country to date.
“Let’s see if this refresh at Liverpool can give them what they need, which is an infusion of energy and youth, so we’ll see,” said Jordan. “I don’t think Brighton have particularly tied him up, have they? What did they achieve?
“You’ve got a World Cup winner coming back. They tied him up to be able to give him to Liverpool at probably below market value, so I imagine they’ll be a little bit disappointed with the situation because it’s happened rather quickly. I thought that we had got Mac Allister tied up in the situation where someone is going to have to pay top money for him, top money.

“I would have [wanted more money for him]. I’d want these big clubs who come along and take everybody else’s vision and don’t do it themselves to pay a requisite price for him. Brighton’s reward for their brilliant endeavour and their scouting and due diligence and all they do that other people simply can’t be bothered with is [they should get] top money, take the top club’s pants right down and make them pay for it.
“The point is that they’ve met his release clause so it’s the end of the discussion. I wouldn’t be saying anything. I would have been saying that I wanted a bigger release clause. They did the contract before he went to the World Cup, didn’t they? So it was in a totally different land.”
Manchester United were linked with a potential move for Mac Allister before Liverpool muscled in to poach his signature for themselves, with the Reds hoping to get a deal fully done by the end of this week, according to the Daily Mail. It is said that they are hoping to complete most of their summer business prior to the start of pre-season training and could follow up the capture of Mac Allister by targeting Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes, who is also said to be admired by those in power at Anfield.
Mason Mount had also emerged as an option for Liverpool after the end of the Premier League season but is now widely expected to join Manchester United, who are reportedly preparing to submit an official bid for the England playmaker behind closed doors. The Anfield club are set for a busy summer window and will need to find replacements for their recently departed players, with the likes of James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita having been set for release ahead of next month.
