Liverpool transfers ranked as Risky move backfired and Klopp lost trust in duo

Liverpool came into this season with plenty of promise after coming within two wins of a historic quadruple last year. A number of changes were made to Jurgen Klopp’s squad in the summer with Sadio Mane being replaced by Darwin Nunez the highlight of Liverpool transfer window.

But other moves were also made as well as a surprise in the January window with Cody Gakpo arriving. However, it’s been a mixed bag for most of Liverpool’s signings over the past 12 months in what ended up being a below-par campaign.

They’re all but confirmed to be playing in the Europa League next season, despite a spirited end to the campaign. Gakpo has come in and hit the ground running at Anfield, proving that he’s capable of stepping in as Roberto Firmino’s heir.

But how did Liverpool’s other signings stack up? Express Sport takes a look at all five new signings made by Liverpool over the past two windows.

Cody Gakpo – Success

It was a deal that came out of nowhere in the weeks following the World Cup as Manchester United had been seen as the favourites to sign Gakpo for several months. Liverpool swooped in under the noses of their rivals to nab Gakpo’s signature and the Dutchman hasn’t taken long to settle into life at his new club.

Gakpo arrived at Liverpool at a time when Jurgen Klopp’s side were going through a disastrous spell, but the new arrival eventually helped spark a new lease of life into their attacking unit. His coming-of-age display came in Liverpool’s 7-0 thrashing of United in March and looks to have cemented the starting spot through the middle in the Reds’ attack.

Even more will be expected of the 24-year-old next season, but he’s arguably been the pick of the bunch.

Arthur Melo – Disaster

A gamble of a loan move that ultimately failed miserably for Liverpool. Signed at a time when Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all injured, Arthur was seen as a cheap option to bolster Liverpool’s midfield.

Liverpool’s need for midfield reinforcements was clear to see earlier in the summer, but the club opted against making any permanent signings after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni. But a long-term injury effectively ruled Arthur out for the entire season as Liverpool’s midfield was back to full strength by the time the Brazilian was ready to play.

Fabio Carvalho – Jury’s still out

Was one of a few highlights in the first couple of months in Liverpool’s season, bringing a breathe of fresh air to Liverpool’s attack. But he’s struggled to find his best position in Liverpool’s line-up with Klopp now stacked full of quality options in attack.

Klopp maintains that Carvahlo is a valued member of the squad, but the Portuguese star will want more minutes next year. The Europa League may end up helping Carvalho get just that and he’ll have to use that platform to get more face time with Klopp.

Calvin Ramsay – Judge him next year

Signed as the ideal back-up option to Trent Alexander-Arnold, Calvin Ramsey’s debut season at Anfield has been beset with injury. He ended up making just two appearances for Liverpool – both off the bench – before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the season.

Ramsey is set to be back and available for pre-season training, where Klopp will get a first real glimpse of the teenager for a long period of time. Like Carvalho, Ramsey may need the Europa League next year to gain some game time.

Darwin Nunez – Hit and miss

The club-record signing has become an instant fan favourite for his gung-ho approach on the pitch and Luis Suarez-like passion. But Nunez is still clearly a diamond in the rough that is yet to find his full potential at Liverpool.

A return of 15 goals in all competitions can’t be frowned upon, but his chances in front of goal should have led to far more conversions. He was dropped to the bench for the final few weeks of the campaign with Klopp calling on Nunez to earn his spot and he will be under pressure to perform next year.
