The potential signing of Ward-Prowse is likely to be an expensive one should Liverpool pursue a deal, with the Saints skipper having committed his long-term future to the club he joined as an eight-year-old, as recently as last year.
The midfielder, whose fine performances in recent seasons have seen him rewarded with nine England caps, penned a five-year deal at the club to see him through until 2026, as Southampton looked to deter reported interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham.
While it remains unlikely, should Liverpool heed Crooks’ advice and secure a deal for Ward-Prowse, he would become the latest in a long line of Southampton players to have travelled the well-trodden path from St Mary’s to Anfield.
Since the summer of 2014, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk have all swapped the Saints in favour of Liverpool.
