Liverpool’s chances of ending poor Napoli run given boost by Osimhen

Liverpool’s chances of ending poor Napoli run given boost by Osimhen

Liverpool have a huge opportunity to end their poor record against Napoli after the Serie A side’s star striker Victor Osimhen was rated as a serious doubt for the match after picking up an injury. The Reds have failed to win in the three matches they have played in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium but Wednesday’s Champions League clash could pose their best chance to correct that record.

Liverpool and Napoli have become familiar foes in recent years, after being drawn into the same European group three times since 2010. Liverpool have failed to win in Italy on each occasion they have played the Gli Azzurri playing out a 0-0 draw in 2010 before losing twice in two years between 2018 and 2019 under the management of Jurgen Klopp.

However, they could have the opportunity to correct this issue after Napoli’s talismanic striker Osimhen picked up an injury in the club’s 2-1 comeback win over Lazio this weekend. Reports from Italy suggest he did not complete full training today alongside his teammates.

Tricky winger Hirving Lozano was also missing according to GIFN meaning the Serie A side could be further depleted.

Fortunately for the Anfield faithful, the Reds’ home record against the Neapolitans is far superior to what it is away. The club have won two out of three of their fixtures on Merseyside with the 1-0 success in 2018 being particularly important.

“The main thing is we do ourselves justice in the world’s premier club competition – and doing ourselves justice means increasing our chances of reaching the next round.

“We’re in a group with three clubs who have helped write the history of European football, three legendary clubs who play at some of the world’s great footballing theatres: the Johan Cruyff Arena, Anfield and Ibrox Stadium. It will be a journey into the story of European and world football.”

The match in Naples will get underway at 8pm on Wednesday with Klopp looking to oversee a positive start to his side’s Champions League campaign.
