Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has questioned Jurgen Klopp’s decision to sign Arthur Melo from Juventus.
Melo, 26, joined Juventus in 2020 from Barcelona but has been deemed surplus to requirements in Turin and has now moved to Anfield on a season-long loan.
Jurgen Klopp made a U-turn on signing a midfielder last week following defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford and in light of his side’s injury problems.
But Hamann, who won the Champions League, two FA Cups and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool, feels that his old side are making a mistake.
‘I’m not too sure he’s the player they need,’ Hamann told Sky Sports.
‘I would have liked a more offensive player who gets them goals from midfield because they just don’t get enough open play goals from midfield.
‘You know, he can play as a No.8 but he’s more of a holding player and I’m not too sure he’s a player that brings the best out of Liverpool.’
Brazil international Melo started his career in South America with Gremio, helping them win the Copa Libertadores in 2017.
He arrived in Europe with a €31m (£26.7m) transfer to Barcelona in 2018 – playing 72 times for the Catalan giants – and won the La Liga title in 2018-19.
He left Barcelona for Juventus in 2020, arriving for an initial €72m (£62m) fee, adding the 2020-21 Coppa Italia to his trophy cabinet.
Melo has also enjoyed success on the international stage, making 22 caps for Brazil and being named in the 2019 Copa America Team of the Tournament after helping his nation lift the trophy.
He now heads to a Liverpool side who are sixth in the Premier League table following two wins, two draws and a defeat from their opening five games.
The Reds are back in action on Saturday when they head to Everton for the Merseyside derby.
