Liverpool midfielder Fabinho insists he doesn’t understand the criticism directed towards Fred by Manchester United supporters.
Fabinho is set to line up against Fred on Monday evening as United host Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Many United supporters have been unhappy with Fred’s performances in midfield since he was signed in a £52 million deal from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018.
Erik ten Hag has been keen to revamp his midfield this summer but while Frenkie de Jong was the Dutchman’s top priority, United are now poised to complete a £59.5m deal for Real Madrid’s Casemiro.
However, Fabinho is adamant that Fred, who has played alongside for Brazil, has been unfairly singled out during United’s difficult periods.
‘Sometimes I don’t really understand the criticisms with Fred because he is a regular player, he always plays good football,’ Fabinho told The Telegraph.
‘But he is a good player, in the national team, he is always a starter, he always plays good and, yes, sometimes the player needs a little bit more confidence to play good.
‘Last season he played really good football, maybe he was one of the best United players.
‘This season United didn’t start really good but I hope Fred will play good and United will stay playing like this.’
