In a social media post, the Grammy-winning singer shared her thoughts about the overused term — and why she hopes its usage dwindles.

“This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart.. cancel culture is appropriation,” Lizzo started her message.
“There was real outrage from truly marginalized people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected,” her post continued. “I hope we can phase out of this & focus our outrage on real problems.”

Many fans agreed with Lizzo’s hot take.
“I don’t want people to be cancelled. I want people to be *held accountable* and to receive consequences according to the bad action/crime that they did. Is this too much to ask?” one Twitter user asked.
“Cancel culture is being used and twisted and co-opted by people who just want to bully,” another person observed. “Most people in 2023 know that bullying is wrong, but they know they can get away with it if they dress it up as moral outrage. It’s RAMPANT in fan culture and completely disingenuous.”
“I think there are people that definitely needed to be cancelled. Now I think people that are genuinely good people that made mistakes are getting cancelled,” a third person argued.
This isn’t the first time that Lizzo has been wrapped up in a “cancel culture” controversy. Last summer, Kathy Hilton found herself the target of online backlash after she mixed up the About Damn Time singer with another plus-size Black public figure, Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe.
