The English capital was handed the crown due its restaurants and people among other categories, while its luxury properties and investment opportunities also helped.

The title was decided by worldsbestcities.com who rank places based on categories they call “the six pillars of place equity”.

They include Place, Product, Programming, People, Prosperity, and Promotion.

London was voted number one in both the people and promotion categories, with its social media presence the strongest among all the cities.

In fact, London led the way online with more Instagram hashtags, Facebook check-ins and TripAdvisor reviews than other cities.

Additionally, TikTok has “prioritised London for years” according to those in charge of rankings, and has just started a 15-year lease on an entire office block in the city.

The website also said London’s “culinary industry is being reborn” praising its wide variety of restaurants.

It said: “The city with the fourth-best restaurants on the planet is buzzing again with big-name openings like Dubai-based izakaya-style restaurant Kinoya in Harrods.

“There are hundreds of other rooms soon joining this increasingly daring culinary destination serving—and welcoming the world once more.”

Adding to the city’s appeal was its apparent lure for luxury homeowners and businesses.

The capital was said to have “new wealthy residents who can now afford to check off a big item on the multi-millionaire bucket list: property in the best city on the planet”.

Those new residents came in good numbers, with 61 luxury London properties — all worth £9.6million or more — sold in the first six months of 2022 – the highest number in 10 years.

The highest-profile new residents include Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri.

According to fDi Markets, the Financial Times’ foreign investment tracker, London has also attracted the most foreign direct investments into tech from international companies since 2018, ahead of New York, Singapore and Dubai.

The site puts this down to “recent tax incentives” that include “the lowest corporation tax rate among G7 countries” and a “cornucopia of research and development tax credits”.

London was also said to have “the best-educated citizenry on the planet”.

Following London in second place was Paris, while New York came in at third. Tokyo and Dubai rounded off the top five.

Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Singapore and Amsterdam made up the rest of the top ten places.
