A Long Island family’s rescue dog was saved by firefighters after the pooch fell into their home’s cesspool.

Duke, a 3-year-old black lab-French bulldog mix, slipped into a hole dug in the backyard of the Melville home by a crew pumping the cesspool out on Wednesday, NBC-4 New York reported. He was found about 10 feet underground, frantic and crying.

“He was crying, and for any pet parent, that is just the worst sound you can hear,” said Duke’s owner, Alison O’Loughlin. “And the feeling of hopelessness that I don’t have the tools to get him.”

The canine’s rescue team, which used a ladder to bring the pup to safety, included the Melville Volunteer Fire Department, the Huntington Manor Fire Department and the Suffolk County Emergency Services Unit.

“The dog jumped through the ladder and situated himself on the last rung of the ladder and we pulled him up,” Chief Chuck Brady of the Huntington Manor Fire Department told the outlet.

The Melville Fire Department posted on Facebook that the dog was “wet, dirty and afraid, but uninjured.”
