Last year, GLAMOUR unveiled the winners of the Women of the Year Awards 2021, and what a roll-call it was. Priyanka Chopra, Little Mix, Victoria Beckham and the co-founders of the charity Black Minds Matter, Agnes Mwakatuma and Annie Nash – whose mission is to connect Black individuals and families to game changing mental health support – all made the cut for the very first year of the awards, as well as Stranger Things’ very own Millie Bobby Brown.
Other winners included Amika George for her game-changing activism, author Bernardine Evaristo and model Ellie Goldstein who has Down’s Syndrome. Footballer Marcus Rashford, 23, was also honoured for his work during the pandemic to hold the government to account over childrens’ school meals. And in a final surprise to the evening, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also made an appearance to announce a special NHS game-changer award for their “courage, humanity and unwavering dedication.”
The string of winners, all of whom GLAMOUR UK readers felt had changed the world for the better in their own special way, featured on the digital covers of the corresponding issues and were honoured during the streamed ceremony, hosted by comedian Katherine Ryan, where winners accepted their prizes virtually.
The video also shows Frankie Bridge reflecting on her mental health battle and how she first spoke about it publicly in an interview with GLAMOUR, saying: “I didn’t want to live my life anymore, I was crying all the time, wanted to spend time in bed and hide away. Then I realised maybe my depression and anxiety had taken over me rather than me having control of it.
“I chose GLAMOUR [to speak about her mental health with] as I thought they’d be sensitive to the subject… I wanted to help others to seek help when they need it. And people still sometimes say they’ve seen the story and it’s helped them.”
And this, really, encapsulates what the Women of The Year Awards are about: showcasing wxmen who, by speaking out, telling their stories of the stories of others, have made a genuine, marked difference in the world. And we couldn’t be more grateful to them for that.
