LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer was a major sports moment.
After scoring his 38,388th point on Tuesday night, James was congratulated by top figures around the world, from his fellow athletes to famous musicians, and even by members of his own family.
On Wednesday, he received a kind message from a very special person.
Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, took to Twitter to congratulate the King on the record.
“[LeBron] has been changing the game for 20 years, and has become a leader on and off the court,” Obama tweeted. “Congrats on making history.”
This isn’t the first time James and Obama have crossed paths.
LeBron visited Obama in the White House in back-to-back years in 2013 and 2014 following the Heat’s NBA title wins in 2012 and 2013.
As the first Heat title was also LeBron’s first championship win in the NBA, greeting President Obama at the White House was a major moment.
“We’re in the White House right now,” James said during the January 2013 visit to Washington, DC. “This is like, ‘Hey Mama, I made it.”
With LeBron set to play a few more seasons, there could be a tweet in the future where Obama congratulates him for doing something no NBA player has done before: reaching 40,000 career points.
