Earlier this year, former National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe announced his decision to enter his name into the NBA Draft.
The Kentucky big man left the door open for a possible return to Lexington if he doesn’t hear what he needs to hear from NBA scouts. And now that the Wildcats failed to land top-tier transfer Hunter Dickinson, his services are all the more needed at Rupp Arena.
During an appearance with The Dan Patrick Show on Thursday, Kentucky head coach John Calipari was asked to provide an update on the Tshiebwe situation.
Coach Cal said he met with Tshiebwe on Wednesday to discuss his basketball future. He said the star big man has met with several NBA teams to gauge interest before this year’s draft process.
“He was in my office yesterday. I’m talking to NBA teams. I talked to one owner about Oscar because he is going to do some more workouts. My thing, right now, is to do everything I can to help Oscar get in that league because I believe he’ll stay,” Calipari said, via Saturday Down South. “Do I want to coach Oscar another year? Yes! What am I, stupid? Stupid?! Yes, I want to coach him another year. But, if I’m doing right by him, I’ve gotta give him every opportunity to run this out and see exactly where he is.”
Tshiebwe is projected as a late second-round pick if he does get selected in this year’s upcoming draft.
