In part of Tuesday’s heated segment on ESPN’s First Take, Kendrick Perkins claimed 80 percent of the NBA’s MVP voters are white.
On Wednesday, the show issued a correction against that number.
“The NBA publicly announces the voters each year and after review, it is clear the panel is much more diverse than what was portrayed by Kendrick Perkins,” First Take host Molly Qerim said. “We wanted to make sure that we corrected that today.”
They didn’t provide any further clarification on the voting demographic.
After citing the inaccurate stat Tuesday, Perkins wrote on Twitter that “a speaker of TRUTH has no friends.” While First Take cleaned up his incorrect data, the former center hasn’t publicly acknowledged his error.
Perkins previously accused Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic of padding his stats in hopes of earning his third consecutive MVP award. J.J. Redick challenged that opinion before, but Tuesday was the first time both former players discussed the topic together on First Take.
Redick criticized Perkins for creating a false portrayal of Jokic while implying that white MVP voters favor white players.
“What we’ve just witnessed is the problem with this show, where we create narratives that do not exist in reality,” Redick said.
