With the San Antonio Spurs in the rebuilding stage and far from championship contention, it seemed only a matter of time before legendary head coach Gregg Popovich would retire.
That public perception changed on Tuesday night during the NBA draft lottery.
The Spurs landed the No. 1 overall pick, giving them the right to draft the seven-foot-five French phenom in Victor Wembanyama.
The social media world all said the same thing about Pop after the Spurs locked down the No. 1 pick: he’s never going to retire. Rob Perez started the party when he tweeted about Pop’s future.
“Pop never retiring.”

He wasn’t alone, though.
“Gregg Popovich when someone asks him when he’ll retire now that the Spurs are gonna get Wembanyama,” Bet MGM said using a clip from Wolf of Wall Street.

The last time the Spurs had the No. 1 pick in the Popovich era, the selection was Tim Duncan who became a Hall of Famer, helping the franchise capture multiple championships.
We’ll see if Wembanyama can have similar success in San Antonio.
