On Friday night, Brittney Griner made her return to the WNBA court for the first time in 578 days.
The Phoenix Mercury star, who spent the entire 2022-23 season imprisoned in Russia, took the court for this year’s season opener against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Before the game, Vice President Kamala Harris met with Griner and the Mercury in their locker room.
“I know that was rough and that was so difficult for you,” she told the locker room, via CNN. “A team is a team, that’s family.”

Harris and the Biden Administration played a massive role in Griner’s return to the United States, facilitating a prisoner swap that saw the 32-year-old basketball star come home in December.
Griner scored a game-high 18 points on 7/9 shooting. She also added six rebounds and four blocks in 25 minutes of action.
“It was nice to be back on the court in a real game and everything,” she said. “The love from the fans when I came out was amazing… I definitely feel it. I felt it when I was over there still.”
