LeBron James didn’t look particularly old while leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a Game 3 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.
Days after Dillon Brooks trash-talked the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, James went 10-of-20 for 25 points (apparently 15 high of earning Brooks’ respect), nine rebounds, and five assists in a 111-101 victory.
Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, LeBron said after the game that he felt no pressure to make a point at Brooks’ expense.
“I’ve been doing this too long. I’ve made enough statements,” James said. “No. We had an opportunity to come home and play well on our home floor, and we did that. No statement was made. We just wanted to play well and got a win. And we want to try to do that in Game 4, as well. But I don’t need to make statements.”
James confronted Brooks during pre-game warmups. Saying there “was nothing private” about the brief encounter, the 38-year-old will let everyone draw their own conclusions on what was said.
Brooks didn’t back up his big words, going 3-of-13 before getting ejected for hitting James in the groin. The 20-year veteran said he’s encountered plenty of instigators throughout his career.
“This is not my first rodeo,” James said. “I’ve had this throughout my career with certain individuals. It’s easy.”
James doesn’t think he has anything left to prove, and his focus is solely on pursuing a fifth NBA championship.
“At the end of the day, I think my résumé and what I’ve done for this league speaks for itself,” James said. “I don’t really get caught up in any comments like that. Like I continue to say, at the end of the day, my focus is to my teammates and us trying to figure out a way how we can beat the Memphis Grizzlies, not how I can try to beat an individual on their team.”
The Lakers will look to expand their 2-1 lead over the Grizzlies on Monday night.
