Discussions on the level of physical play in the NBA are nothing new. Many fans often cite the 80s and 90s eras as the most physical – and therefore the most demanding – eras in NBA history.
One former player, J.J. Redick, believes the game is physical today, and another former player is calling him out.
In an appearance on SiriusXM’s NBA Radio, Dominique Wilkins said he disagreed with Redick’s assessment of the modern NBA game.
“First of all, Redick doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about,” Wilkins said. The Hawks legend went on to explain how hand checking and increased physicality from defenders was more common in the era he played in.
“To say something as idiotic as that is ridiculous,” said Wilkins. “When you can put your hand on a guy’s hip and make him go a certain way, if you can put that elbow in his chest to slow him up…how many guys can deal with that kind of pressure?”
Redick’s main argument was that Stephen Curry faces more physicality when guarded by a player like Marcus Smart than Larry Bird faced in the 1980s. Redick used the argument to explain why Curry was a better shooter than Bird.
J.J. Redick may be one of the most respected modern NBA analysts, but Dominique Wilkins was not happy with his latest take.
