The Los Angeles Lakers pulled off a shocking comeback Sunday, overcoming a 27-point deficit to earn a 111-108 win over the Dallas Mavericks.
During the closing minute, Anthony Davis hit a fadeaway jumper over Luka Doncic to give the Lakers a three-point lead. ESPN’s camera crew cut to Mark Cuban, whose face said it all.
The Mavericks owner looked disgruntled, to say the least, after watching his team squander a huge lead over a direct Western Conference competitor. ESPN’s Twitter page shared a photo capturing Cuban’s reaction.
Davis finished a dominant performance with 30 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks. The Lakers salvaged a thrilling win despite shooting a dismal 6-of-34 from downtown.
Every game is pivotal down the stretch in a tightly contested conference. The Mavericks now have a narrow one-game lead over three teams (Timberwolves, Jazz, and Warriors) for the No. 6 seed.
Dallas could not only fall into the play-in tournament, but sink deeper out of the playoffs altogether. While still the last team out, the Lakers are only one game behind the 10th-place New Orleans Pelicans and 2.5 behind the Mavericks.
Despite recently acquiring Kyrie Irving, Dallas has dropped four of its last five games, all against Western Conference opponents. Cuban will hope to be in a better mood when the Mavericks begin a four-game homestand Tuesday against the Indiana Pacers.
