Despite their loss to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday, the Denver Nuggets clinched the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference on Wednesday.
They did so thanks to the New Orleans Pelicans’ overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies, which ended any chance the Grizzlies had of catching Denver atop the West.
Nuggets coach Michael Malone said tonight that any celebration his team did after clinching was subdued. Even Malone’s wife jabbed him in a congratulatory text, adding that “it would’ve been a lot better if you guys got it with a win.”
“She’s my ex-wife now,” Malone joked with reporters.

In all seriousness, the Nuggets know their most important accomplishments haven’t happened yet. Denver reached the Western Conference Finals during the 2020 COVID bubble playoffs, but has never played in the NBA Finals.
In fact, the only time the Nuggets ever reached a league title series was in 1976, when they lost to the New York Nets in the ABA Finals.
Larry Brown was Denver’s coach that year, and the Nets were led by star forward Julius Erving, better known as “Dr. J,” so yea, it was a long time ago.
