The San Antonio Spurs won the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft Lottery. And in doing so, they won the rights to draft one of the greatest prospects in league history: Victor Wembanyama.
Many around the NBA world viewed San Antonio as the ideal landing spot for the 7-foot-5 Frenchman. With an all-time great head coach in Gregg Popovich and a rich history of foreign talent, the Spurs seem like the perfect fit.
On top of these factors, Wembanyama will also be working with San Antonio basketball legend Tim Duncan.
NBA insider Marc Stein says Duncan will train Wembanyama to start his NBA career.
“At the behest of longtime Spurs patriarch Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan agreed to join Pop’s coaching staff for the 2019-20 campaign interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. That one season was enough for Duncan to reaffirm what many suspected and what he surely already knew—full-time coaching isn’t for him—but the expectation is that he will regularly visit the team’s practice facility to work with Wembanyama when the Spurs are home.”
Duncan and Wembanyama’s play styles couldn’t be more different, but there’s no question that the 19-year-old phenom has a lot to learn from one of the greatest big men of all time.
Duncan spent all 19 of his NBA seasons in San Antonio, winning five NBA titles. The Spurs hope they have another longtime star in Wembanyama.
