John Hao was one of five students injured in a shooting on Michigan State’s campus that left four dead.

Hao, 20, is paralyzed from the waist down after getting shot in the back on Feb. 13. As ESPN’s Malika Andrews highlighted on NBA Today, James Harden reached out to offer support.

The Philadelphia 76ers star sent Hao game-worn sneakers, donated to his GoFundMe page to help pay for medical bills, and called the “huge fan” to offer encouragement.

“Everything will work itself out,” Harden told Hao on a FaceTime call. “Be strong. You’re all right. I promise you are.”

Hao’s roommate and friend, Argent Qian, set up the GoFundMe page that has now exceeded $350,000 in donations. He called Hao, an international student from China, a “passionate sports enthusiast” and identified Harden as his favorite player.

“Let us come together, especially as Spartans, to show the world that we support John and want him to achieve his dreams,” Qian wrote. “John’s story is a tragic reminder of the importance of coming together and supporting one another during times of need.”

Harden gave Hao his phone number, telling him they’d talk again soon. He hopes Hao can soon attend a future game.
