The battle for Northern California began Saturday night when the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors commenced their first-round NBA playoff series.
Before a thrilling Game 1 unfolded at Golden 1 Center, the San Francisco 49ers hedged their bets by playing both sides.
Rather than picking a squad in the regional feud, the NFL franchise wished each team “best of luck in the playoffs” with a neutral graphic of Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox.
Fans razzed the 49ers for not taking a stand in the California feud.
“Pick a side losers,” a fan urged.

Fans may not like it, but the 49ers probably made the wise move. They likely count many Warriors and Kings fans among their supporters, so it’d be foolish to anger anyone.
While the Warriors have the prestige of four recent NBA championships, the Kings are the exciting up-and-comers who finally snapped a 16-year postseason drought. It’s a tough rooting choice for any impartial observer.
Sacramento began the best-of-seven series with a 126-123 win behind 38 points from Fox. They’ll host Game 2 on Monday night before going to the Bay Area for Games 3 and 4.
