The Milwaukee Bucks fired head coach Mike Budenholzer on Thursday. It’s the latest sign of a championship no longer providing long-term job security.
Budenholzer led Milwaukee to a title two years ago. However, he’s not the first recent NBA champion let go.
As noted by Kevin Wildes of First Things First, four of the five coaches to win a championship since 2015 have since gotten fired.

After missing the playoffs this season, the Toronto Raptors fired 2019 champion Nick Nurse. Last year, the Los Angeles Lakers parted ways with Frank Vogel despite winning the 2020 title.
Tyronn Lue led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the 2016 title, and they won the Eastern Conference in the next two seasons. However, the Cavs fired him after an 0-6 start to the 2018-19 campaign.
Both of Lue’s Finals losses came to Kerr’s Warriors. While one championship clearly doesn’t give a head coach immunity, four rings should certainly give Kerr a far bigger safety net.
Kerr, Gregg Popovich, and Eric Spoelstra are the only current NBA head coaches who have won a championship with that team. They’re also the league’s longest-tenured coaches. Michael Malone is the only other coach to hold his current job for more than four seasons.
