Love Island: Charlene White on using show as an educational tool

Loose Women fans have slammed Charlene White for suggesting Love Island could be ‘educational’ for kids.

On today’s programme the presenter, 42, said friends of hers had used the dating show to teach their children about online safety.

While discussing the dangers of the internet, she said: “I have friends who watch it [Love Island] together as a family because there are certain scenarios that come up, gaslighting for example or blaming someone for their own wrong behaviour…

“There are stories that happen on Love Island that if you’re sitting watching it with your family, they can talk it through why something was wrong or right.”

Panellist Kelle Bryan was in agreement with the mum-of-two, but fans weren’t having any of it.

One mused: “I truly am sorry, maybe I’m getting old, but who watches something like #LoveIsland with their kids? There’s other ways to have those conversations.”

Another mocked: “Yes, Love Island – that great moral benchmark.”

While a third viewer fumed: “WTF. Love island. The most toxic sexualised shows. That’s disgraceful”.

However other viewers sided with Charlene, one wrote: “That’s exactly how I watch love island, as a guide.
“It sounds ridiculous but there are many people even those in their 30s or 40s who act as clueless as the contestants in real life. It’s a what not to do guide when it comes to dating.”

Charlene insisted her friends reckon the show is “one of the easiest vehicles they can use with their kids because it mirrors real life,” but she’ll have a hard time convincing the viewers.

With its massive ratings, Love Island is a jewel in ITV’s crown, but the show has been criticised for its content.

This series, viewers have already threatened to call Ofcom after Davide Sanclimenti, 27, ‘cracked on’ with Gemma Owen, 19.

Fans were aghast by the huge age gap with the broadcasting regulator receiving 167 complaints for its episode on June 7 which saw the couple kiss.

However Gemma defended their difference in age.

Speaking to Davide, who asked her whether she thought it was an issue, she said: “It’s not an issue for me at all. I feel like if it was, I wouldn’t have wanted to get to know you in the first place. And as I’ve said, I’ve been speaking to guys and seeing guys who are much older than me.”

Last year Love Island received a record-breaking 24,763 complaints to Ofcom.

Fans will remember the postcard Faye received in Casa Amor, which sent her into a spiral.

Following a movie night challenge the estate agent saw a clip from earlier in the series where her beau Teddy admitted he was sexually attracted to Clarisse Juliette.

Faye was naturally upset by what she witnessed and fans called out the ITV for showcasing the drama.

In response the broadcaster said they had received complaints while pointing out that: “Welfare and duty of care towards our contributors is always our primary concern, and we take the emotional well-being of all the Islanders extremely seriously”.
