This season Lorena Saravia took a trip down memory lane, with a collection that was an ode to the women in her family. Looking through old photo albums at what her grandmother and other women used to wear made her rethink the sustainable values of her brand. In turn, her fall collection featured an array of looks that she hopes will be in her customers’ wardrobes for all time.
Luckily, in Saravia’s heritage, style was a way of life. This was evident in a short, tailored off-white smoking jacket with black lapels worn over a matching tunic and off-white pants. A pair of leather looks—in rosé metallic or tanned leather—somehow had a modern-yet-antique-feel simultaneously, as did her signature boots in a bold shade of red. A few dresses in glossy satin felt more elegant, especially the pastel pink number paired with a monochromatic flowing cape with a Mao collar.
The highlights were clear: a leather jumpsuit inspired by a ski suit worn by her aunt Jackie in the 1980s was dyed in Saravia’s grandmother’s signature nail varnish color. “It has that soul [and] energy that can be passed on. It’s a piece that has its own light,” the designer said. Black denim pieces, including a version of the jumpsuit, as well as a look that consisted of a cropped biker jacket paired with cowboy pants—chaps included—felt very contemporary.
Away from the trends, Saravia made a collection that’s practical in more than one sense. Perhaps these days practicality goes beyond the actual clothes and applies also to the attachment created with your garments. It could be a tailored jacket, a cape, or a leather jumpsuit that gets to live in your closet for a lifetime, and who knows, may become a family heirloom one day.
