A group of Los Gatos and Saratoga high school students qualified for a prestigious national robotics competition after placing in regional competitions last month.
The school district announced that the students from both schools earned spots in the FIRST World Championships in Houston, taking place April 19-22.
“I am so proud of the incredible work, commitment and success of our Robotics Teams at both schools,” said Superintendent Bill W. Sanderson. “Our region is home to some of the top competitors in the country and the world, and it’s wonderful to see our students’ hard work and staff’s dedication pay off.”
FIRST is a robotics program and community that prepares students for the future though various programs and competitions.
Los Gatos’ team, Iron Claw, was named the regional winner at the San Francisco FIRST Robotics Competition in March. Nearly 50 teams competed for a chance to qualify for the FIRST World Championship.
Saratoga’s team, Cuttlefish, was one of five that placed in the FIRST Tech Challenge, which also qualified them for the FIRST World Championships.
Rodrigo Coppelli, Los Gatos High School’s robotics and engineering teacher, said he watched the LGHS team adapt during a difficult situation during their last competition.
Los Gatos’ team formed an alliance with Spartan Robotics, two teams from Mountain View and Credo high schools. After three rounds of competition, the group decided to take out one of its robots, which was malfunctioning.
“This meant they would move forward in the competition with just two robots, putting themselves at a severe disadvantage against the other competing alliances,” Coppelli said. “Iron Claw and Spartan Robotics competed three more times to win the championship with just two robots, a feat that has never taken place at the San Francisco Regional competition.”
