After 50 years of putting out music and hitting the road, East Los Angeles band Los Lobos are going back to school as part of their milestone anniversary tour.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, June 16 for the 50th anniversary shows at loslobos.org.
The 12-stop national tour will kick off in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Aug. 12, and will eventually land the band at The Paramount in Los Angeles on Nov. 21, the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood on Nov. 22 and at James A. Garfield High School’s The Escalante Auditorium, the band’s alma mater, for the last local show on Nov. 25.
“Garfield High is our alma mater and where we all met. It remains a huge part of who we are. There will always be a special place in our hearts for Garfield High. We may be wolves, but we’re also Bulldogs for life,” said Louie Perez, Jr., the band’s guitarist and percussionist in a press release.
Los Lobo’s lineup includes Perez Jr., vocalist David Hidalgo, guitarist Cesar Rosas, and bass player Conrad Lozano, who all got together in 1973. Saxophonist and keyboardist Steve Berlin joined the band in 1984.
Influenced by their Chicano heritage, Mexican folk music, R&B as well as punk, the rock band has won four Grammy Awards, including “Best Americana Album,” for the 2021 release, “Native Sons.”
Since forming, Los Lobos have kept a busy schedule, performing more than 100 shows a year for five decades while recording 17 studio albums, several live LPs and compilations.
One of the biggest moments of the band’s career came in 1987 when they recorded eight songs for the 12-song soundtrack for the biopic film “La Bamba,” about the life and death of Chicano rock star Ritchie Valens. The band’s cover of the title track topped the U.S. charts.
