Luca Brecel’s home town of Maasmechelen will be throwing a World Championship party for him and making him an honorary member of the city council, but only after he has fulfilled his promise to play in a pro-am in Austria this weekend.

The 28-year-old pulled off a stunning world title win by downing Mark Selby in the Crucible final on Monday, having beaten the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams on his way to the showpiece.

He beat these legends of the game by playing some thrilling attacking snooker and he is sure to have won a huge amount of new fans across the globe.

Brecel’s home town were supporting him long before his Crucible glory, though, and they will be throwing a party for him on 14 May to celebrate his success.

An Instagram post from the Maasmechelen account congratulating Brecel read: ‘History has been made! Luca Brecel crowned himself the first non-English-speaking world snooker champion on May 1. The Belgian Bullet defeated the Englishman Mark Selby in a blood-strengthening final with a magnificent performance.

‘And that deserves a MaasMagnifiek party! The local government is organising a great folk’s party on Sunday afternoon 14 May to celebrate the new national hero together with all the residents. More information about this coming soon.

‘Honorary citizenship. A historic achievement also deserves a historic award. The Schepencollege will therefore also nominate Luca Brecel as an honorary citizen to the city council.’

Brecel has not quite finished playing snooker yet, though, as he signed up to play the Vienna Open this weekend before he went on to win the world title.

The Belgian Bullet is not one to go back on his word and he is playing in the pro-am event on Friday in Austria, with the likes of Rob Milkins, Tom Ford and David Grace also involved.

In fact, the world champ will have a lot to live up to after Ford made a 147 on Thursday at the event.

The lucky players alongside Brecel in his group are Austrians Philipp Koch and Arno Wild, Portuguese player Francisco Domingues and Aref Hussaini from Afghanistan, with all playing best of three against the world champ on Friday.

Top prize in Vienna is €2,500 (£2,180), a far cry from the £500,000 he picked up in Sheffield, but kudos to the champ for sticking to his commitments.
