If Nike wanted people to talk about their product, the truth is that they have succeeded. The sports brand has been at the center of controversy for paying a transgender influencer to model one of its sports bras on social media. Since the ad was posted, the talk about him and Dylan Mulvaney, the 26-year-old Broadway actress and TikTok star, has become famous beyond the followers she had on the networks. She posted videos and photos to her Instagram page, tagging Nike Women and adding the hashtag “Nike partner.”, stating that the post had been sponsored by the sportswear brand. Mulvaney has yet to undergo gender reassignment surgery, and is currently taking hormones to help her transition into a female.
The announcement has generated a multitude of reactions around the world. From swimmers who have later suffered attacks for declaring themselves against it to Spanish politicians such as Carla Antonelli, former deputy in the PSOE and now very close to Sumar de Yolanda Díaz. “Boycott Nike for hiring a trans woman to advertise a sports bra, they want us to mark us on the margins, excluded, prostituted, destitute, outside of society And if we commit suicide, it’s also our fault for being trans: The putrid harassment of Terferío and Transphobia”, he has written on his social networks. She was outraged: “The pufo and ridicule have reached such a degree that trans people in Spain have been able to change their birth certificate and DNI without the need for genital surgery for 16 years, what has been done now is to depathologize it and from self-determination, and in all this time who had surgery or not has not been put on the table, all this is happened in one more of the shit to justify transphobia, or as you say, divide, “he replied to a comment.
Lucía Etxebarria’s response
Whoever has stood on the other side has been the writer Lucía Etxebarria, very active against the Trans law, who has responded:”Know:
- That the boycott of Nike is done because Dylan is a biological man who has not had surgery or hormones. (HE HAS NO CHEST). And because Nike has terminated a woman’s contract for becoming pregnant.
- 2. That Antonelli is at the top of Yolanda Díaz’s list
- Dylan is not an athlete and has no chest and does not have to advertise a sports bra for women, while Nike terminates the contract of a true athlete for getting pregnant.
- Antonelli goes on the lists with Mónica García and appeared supporting Yolanda Díaz”
Before, the writer had made it very clear what she thought: “Dylan Mulvaney is NOT a trans influencer. She is not hormonal or operated“.
It is not the first time that Nike uses a trans star in its marketing. Mara Gómez, the first trans woman to play in Argentina’s professional soccer league, starred in the brand’s “Play New” campaign in 2021.
