But they were unable to make the most of their golden chances and eventually made to pay midway through the second half. Coventry began pushing more and more towards Luton’s goal and it was Viktor Gyokeres down the left flank who played in Gustavo Hamer to smash in from the edge of the box for the equaliser.
Both sides were a bit more cautious going forward after Hamer’s goal as the playoff final went to extra time. Fatigue then took its toll on a number of players with fresh legs needed to try and make something happen and it looked momentarily that Joe Taylor had grabbed a dramatic late winner, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a handball.
That proved to be the final chance with penalties needed to separate the two sides. Neither Ben Wilson or Ethan Horvath were able to get near some of the spot-kicks from both sides.
But it was Dabo’s miss that ultimately sent Luton up to the Premier League with Coventry fans left licking their wounds. Kenilworth Road, a stadium with a capacity under 11,000, will now be a Premier League ground next year with Luton aiming to upset the apple cart.
